REDMOND, Wash. โ After years of personal computer and Mac exclusivity, Microsoft Excel is finally coming to PlayStation 5 later this year. The company’s intention to bring the long-time exclusive workbook to Sonyโs console was confirmed by Asha Sharma in an earnings call, earlier this week.
โItโs been a great 40 years of formulas and pivot tables,โ Sharma said on the Teams call, her voice fading in and out as the app buffered. “Itโs time to bring the fun to PlayStation. This Halloween, PlayStation and Xbox players will be able to fill cells and make pie charts together for the first time in Excel history.โ
Sharma then went into detail about the new features that will be available with the latest version of Excel.
โWith Co-Pilot capabilities built in, weโre changing the way players Excel,โ Sharma said, after giving up on Teams and moving the call to Zoom. โAnd with Sonyโs new AI that plays the game for you, players will be able to take a nap, while the PlayStation, in collaboration with Co-Pilot, plays the game for them.โ
Not everyone is happy about Excel coming to the PlayStation. Frank Julian, a long-time PC owner, feels betrayed by the news.
โWhy did I even buy a PC if youโre just going to port everything that I bought the PC for,โ Julian said in a response video to the news. โI guess I should have seen this coming when they put Outlook on Android phones. Loyalty is officially dead, folks. I hope they know Iโm burning all my Excel T-shirts and posters. Iโm done.โ
At press time, Sharma announced this yearโs Microsoft Excel World Championship would be played exclusively on PlayStation 5s.
