Gotham – Thanks for comin’ everyone, I know it’s late, I just wanted to … I dunno, take the temperature of the room, so to speak. Cause I don’t know how many of you got friends or family in other cities, but I gotta tell ya: I was just talking to my cousin Dominic the other day, and he’s also in the ‘general criminality’ business, only he’s in New York, and he was saying that not only does his boss not dress up like a rural serial killer, but he never gets dosed with a toxin that makes him experience all the worst parts of his life rolled into one horrible, unending moment. No, not even once, much less as frequently as five times a week.
I don’t know if he’d be paid extra if his boss did decide to start wearing complicated hats and getting obsessed with an old story about new math, but I sure know that we ain’t being paid extra! Last week, Riddler asked me if I knew ‘what was always thirsty but died with a drink,’ and when I asked him about how come I ain’t been paid in a month, he shot me in the knee with a green pistol and, according to Dominic, that’s not how his organization operates at all! Apparently they’re a lot more into the drug trade and protection rackets, with some gambling and import/export of illicit goods, more than ‘waging a war on the concept of order itself,’ and I’m starting to think that just maybe we don’t need to put our lives into the hands of a luchador with a severe steroid addiction coasting on the one cool thing he did thirty years ago.
Maybe what we need is to start investing in our communities, you know, start organizing and take collective action against the power structures that have placed us in a situation where we’re left with no recourse, other than to operate outside the law or rely upon a system that is increasingly disinterested in helping its citizens achieve, and far more into maximizing profits for the people who already got too muc-OH SHIT, it’s da freakin’ BAT!
