HOUSTON โ Game studio Rongo, made up of various industry veterans, has announced their debut game, Rapscallions, a live service hero shooter. In addition to the game, they have also announced mass layoffs amidst a studio wide shut down to coincide with the gameโs release.
Game director Hunter Bishop spoke about the gameโs planned first season.
โWeโre so excited to finally share with everyone the game weโve been working on for the last six years,โ Bishop said in a dev blog. โRapscallions is a brand new live service hero shooter. We have an exciting roadmap for the game that we know youโll love. For the games first season we will have our launch event that awards exclusive skins and double xp to all players within the first two weeks. Following that, for week three weโll be laying off most of the studio before shutting down the game completely after not reaching Fortnite numbers. For week four weโll have a really exciting studio update where weโll thank the players as we announce the studio is closing. Itโs everything you want in a live service game.โ
Lead gameplay designer Ron Waffles gave insight into what makes Rapscallions unique.
โRapcallions features a colorful cast of wacky heroes. Each hero has its own loadout of weapons and abilities to cater to different playstyles. As you play, your characterโs ult is charged and these can be real game changers when used properly. Weโre taking the basic framework of live service games that you love and innovate on them by abilities that donโt require a cooldown. You can spam as much as your heart’s content. Go buck wild and donโt worry, we won;t be around long enough to make balancing changingโ
Character artist John Caramel believes gamers will fall in love with the games cast for the two weeks theyโll have with them.
โWith characters like Tim the Wizard, Methusilah Honeysuckle and Ghee Buttersnaps, we guarantee youโll find a character youโll love. We even have a character whoโs a grizzled soldier with just a regular gun and one with a nice firm butt. We expect at least seven pieces of fan art will be made before people go back to Tracer porn and that timeline lines right up with when weโll be shutting down.โ
At press time, various employees of Rongo have already announced their new studio with their first game set to be a bullet heaven roguelike.
