NEW YORK โ Gamers who were initially shocked by Sony’s announcement that it would discontinue physical disc production starting in 2028, reported having a great night of sleep after realizing there would never be another physical release in The Last of Us series ever again. Doug Ganes, physical media collector and well-rested gamer, says heโs never felt better.
โDonโt get me wrong, I love The Last of Us, but Iโm running out of space,โ Ganes said before showing off a shelf filled with every iteration of the series from the original PS3 release of The Last of Us to the PS5โs The Last of Us Part II Remaster. โIโm happy to support Naughty Dog every chance I get, but itโs nice knowing I wonโt have to anymore. I can just buy the game one time and never have to worry about getting the latest copy, cause mine will never go away and be updated for free, for forever.โ
Tara Jordan, another gamer we spoke to, looks back fondly on her memories with The Last of Us and its physical media exploits, but agrees that she feels like a weight has been lifted with Sonyโs news.
โI used to buy all the collectorโs editions,โ Jordan said before showing off an Ellie statue. โEven the ridiculous ones, like the steel box for Part II that came with a dog whistle. Itโs a relief I donโt have to collect anymore of this junk. I slept for fifteen hours last night. Like good, deep, sleep.โ
Not everyone woke up on the right side of the bed this morning.
โHow am I supposed to enjoy the end of Ellieโs journey if I canโt have the box for Part III up on the shelf with the rest of the collection,โ said Matthew Mitchell, The Last of Us superfan who admitted to owning all physical and digital versions of the game. โSure, Iโm still going to play it on the PS5 and then play it again when they remaster it for the PS6 and then play it again when they bundle it for the PS7 and then play it again when they remake it for the PS8โฆโ
At press time Jordan tossed her Last of Us collectibles in the garbage before heading off to bed for a two-hour nap.
