TORONTO โ Local gamer Shawn Freger has passed away peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by his friends and family as the shaders in the game he wanted to play were almost done being compiled.
While he spent his last few years hoping that he would eventually be able to play Forza Horizon 5 on his PC, his family said he was at peace in his last moments.
โWaiting to play that game was the running theme of his life since Iโve known him,โ said his wife in a beautiful eulogy at his funeral while the compiling shaders screen ran on a projector behind his casket. โWe met at the corner store while he was out getting a Red Bull, insistent he had a long night of gaming ahead of him. When the shaders never finished compiling he called me and thus began an incredible romance. We were together for five years and have a beautiful daughter. He loved his life and we were happy, but there was always an emptiness inside him because he never did get to play the game.โ
Fregerโs three year old son Tyler has vowed to complete his fatherโs life goal.
โDada always want to play game. Dada not play game. Shaders not done. Now Dada gone. Shaders still not done. Iโll play game for Dada. Once shaders are done,โ said Tyler to the tearful funeral attendees before pooping in his pants and waddling away.
Many gamers online have given their thoughts and prayers to Fregerโs family, with many sharing similar stories of tragedy.
โMy brother died before he was able to play Fallout 76. Although I guess thatโs a blessing in hindsight. But he was really excited to play,โ wrote user StepOnMeLadyD_67 on Reddit. โHe was really excited to play some Fallout after the show but then he had to wait for it to compile shaders. It just never finished and after a few months he got hit by a streetcar. So many gamers die each year before their shaders compile and someone needs to step up and do something. Itโs become a real danger to us as a group.โ
At press time, Fregerโs wife accidentally closed Forza Horizon 5 and had to start the shader compilation over again. She has since updated her will.
