CHICAGO โ Weeks after it was discovered that the new Steam Controller will scream if you drop it, another easter egg has been found hiding inside the $99 gamepad. If you throw it against the wall hard enough it will trigger a boss fight with your spouse, significant other, or roommate, our sources report.ย
โAfter hearing the Wilhelm scream from dropping the controller, I thought to myself, โwhat else is hiding inside?โ so I started experimenting,โ says Jason Richmond, the first person to discover the hidden mechanic. โAt first I thought the fight was about me not doing the dishes, or forgetting her birthday, but after mentioning my experience on Reddit, others have let me know this has happened to them too!โ
While Valve has yet to make an official statement that these domestic disputes are in fact programmed inside their hardware, we do know that reports of throwing the controller has triggered a hostile encounter more than 60% of the time.
โThe statistics show this correlation is far too consistent to be a coincidence,โ said Colleen Naymar, a data analyst and tech reporter closely monitoring the controller throwing phenomenon. โBased upon preliminary data, the controller needs to make a noise loud enough to be heard by neighbors, and it helps for there to be underlying tension before attempting to trigger the fight.โ
This easter egg just adds to the Steam Controllers value. The sleek design, ergonomic structure, and expert programming makes this controller one of the best selling pieces of gaming hardware in 2026.
โFrom a marketing perspective, itโs genius. The controller gets thrown, a fight ensues, and the impending breakup only opens up oneโs schedule to more hours for gaming,โ said Greg Gambon, a couples therapist who has been dealing with disputes stemming from controller throwing. โBut the effects it is having emotionally on these young people is extremely detrimental. Romanic relationships are already so hard to come by for this demographic, it shouldnโt be so easy to throw away, literally and metaphorically.โ
At press time, Valve has taken responsibility for the Controllerโs decimation of thousands of relationships across the world, and are offering a $20 Steam gift card to anyone who has been affected.
