TRENTON, N.J. — After Sony’s major announcement discontinuing physical discs for their games, lines have begun forming outside GameStops and Best Buys around the country to be the first person to get their hands on a 30-digit digital download code, our sources report.

“I’ve been here since midnight, and I’m prepared to be here all night tomorrow too,” said Jameson Muir from a lawn chair positioned just outside Best Buy’s automatic sliding doors. “It’s a moment in gaming history, I get to tell my grandkids that I was the pioneer of the digital download frontier, I might not even redeem the code, I’ll probably frame it.”

Despite some pushback to the discontinuing of discs, gaming executives have defended the decision as one that is best for the consumer to give them more money.

“Discs are bulky, they scratch easily, and are just kinda fugly,” said Matthew McDavid, Sony’s Director of Quality Assurance. “ Forget about our profit margins for a second. Regardless of this being a chance for us to charge whatever we want without the prospect of the second hand market giving consumers more choice, no one looks at a fresh PS5 with a disc drive right out of the box and says ‘that looks sexy,’ which is exactly the problem we’re trying to tackle. Our profits are secondary and no one should mention them again in this discussion. We want to make a console that can perform at the highest level, and be sexually attractive to those who use it.”

While this major change will not be implemented until 2028, those lining up are aware of the fast-paced, ever-changing video game industry, and won’t miss their opportunity to witness this changing of the guard.

“We’ve got water, we’ve got diapers, we’ve got vitamin-D capsules, everything you would need in case this turns into a long haul,” said one hopeful posted up outside a GameStop who chose to remain anonymous. “I recently went to an Olivia Rodrigo concert 12 hours early to get a good spot and had some… Issues. So this time around I tried to come overprepared.”

At press time, Sony has offered a disc to digital program where customers can trade their physical games into Sony and can then buy those games as a digital code with a 2% discount.
